On 31 October 2023, a jury for the San Diego County Court in California ordered the US company Monsanto, which was bought by Bayer in 2018, to pay $332 million to Mike Dennis, a 57-year-old former surveyor who developed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after being exposed to Roundup. Mike Dennis used Roundup as a weedkiller in his garden for nearly 35 years.

The jury found that Monsanto had not sufficiently warned Roundup users of the product's toxicity, and in particular of the carcinogenic risks.

Monsanto was held liable for selling a defective product that it knew to be dangerous, and was ordered to pay $7 million in damages and $325 million in punitive damages.

Bayer has already indicated that it intends to appeal the verdict, claiming that the amount awarded to Mike Dennis is excessive and that the verdict contains errors of both fact and law.
