On October 5, 2023, a group of prosecutors applied to a Brazilian court to order the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA), the body responsible for pesticide approval in Brazil, to ban all plant protection products containing atrazine, a herbicide used mainly on soybean, sugarcane and corn plantations. Atrazine has been banned in the European Union since 2004, and in Switzerland, home of Syngenta, which produces the substance, since 2012.

Despite these bans, Syngenta continues to produce and distribute atrazine-based products in many states. In Brazil, atrazine is one of the most widely used pesticides. Exposure to atrazine has been associated with several types of pathology, the severity of which increases with the duration of exposure: in the short term, symptoms of atrazine exposure may include palpitations, vomiting or dizziness. In the long term, atrazine has been recognized as a carcinogen and an endocrine disruptor.
