Monsanto compagny accepts to stop using the controversial words in its adverstising in New York State but says that it disagrees with the General Advocate's conclusions. It accepts the assurance of dicontinuance in order to reach a reasonable agreement.

In 1996, the Office of the Attorney General and Monsanto reached an settlement in which the company agreed to stop making unproven claims about the safety of Roundup products, which contain glyphosate. Monsanto published misleading and deceptive advertisements, claiming that glyphosate-based herbicides, particularly Roundup, were safer than table salt and virtually non-toxic to mammals, birds and fish.

In 2023, New York Attorney General Letitia James entered into a second settlement with Bayer and Monsanto (acquired by Bayer) for false and misleading claims regarding the safety of certain Roundup consumer weed killers, in violation of state laws against false and misleading advertising, and in violation of the 1996 settlement (for more see our summary, nĀ°Assurance No. 23-025).
