More than one million Europeans oppose to the reauthorisation of glyphosate

  June 15, 2017

The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) calling for a ban of glyphosate, the active ingredient of herbicides marketed as Roundup, a reform of the pesticide authorisation process in the EU and the setting of mandatory targets for the reduction of pesticide use in the EU.–more–>to validate the process in less than 5 months (a record!). This European craze demonstrates a strong societal concern for pesticides. <

.

Brussels, June 15, 2017 – The ECI organisers ask the Commission to respect the requests of the signatories by refusing a new authorisation for glyphosate to be voted on in the autumn.

This ECI met the EU requirements in less than five months. It is the European initiative that has achieved the objective most rapidly since the EU launched this tool in 2012. The European Commission is now legally obliged to respond to the demands of Europeans and take them into account in its forthcoming decisions. <

Small reminder on the authorisation process of glyphosate

With regard to glyphosate, the Commission recently announced its intention to renew the licence for this herbicide, which is classified as a probable carcinogen by IARC, in the EU for a period of 10 years. It is expected to make a formal proposal before a discussion with EU government representatives on 19-20 July. EU governments will be invited to vote on this proposal after the summer. On the basis of the result, the Commission will take a final decision before the end of the year when the current authorisation of glyphosate ends.

.
The ECI organizers will submit the signatures in early July to require the Board to respond formally and before the final decision on a new glyphosate authorization is made. The petition will remain open for signature so that people can still vote against glyphosate and for a reduction in pesticide use in the EU. <
