{"id":8450,"date":"2022-12-05T14:01:46","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T14:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/justicepesticides.org\/?p=8450"},"modified":"2022-12-05T14:16:39","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T14:16:39","slug":"177e-session-de-la-fao-stop-toxic-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/justicepesticides.org\/en\/2022\/12\/05\/177e-session-de-la-fao-stop-toxic-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"171st session of the FAO: Stop Toxic Alliance!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Council convenes its 171<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Session today, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[name of organization]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls upon the agency to demonstrate bold leadership on climate action by immediately rescinding its two-year-old agreement with CropLife International (CLI), the global association of the world\u2019s biggest pesticide manufacturers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/pan-international.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/En-Letter-to-DA-Bechdol-2022-11-Nov-28.pdf\">letter<\/a> addressed to FAO Deputy Director General Beth Bechdol and submitted to FAO leadership and Council members, groups called <\/span><b>for \u201cgreater transparency and accountability regarding the FAO\u2019s ongoing and deepening collaboration with CLI,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reiterating earlier demands backed by civil society and Indigenous peoples, farmers and agricultural workers, trade unions, scientists, and academics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Letter Of Intent (LOI) signed between FAO and CropLife in October 2020 agreed to explore collaborations on broad areas of work. Backlash from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pan-international.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Petition-to-Stop-the-FAO-CropLife-ToxicAlliance-en.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 200,000 individuals from over 107 countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, over<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pan-international.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/English-CSO-and-IP-Letter-to-FAO-Council-RE-Ending-CLI-Partnership.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 430 civil society and Indigenous Peoples organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nearly 300<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agroecologyresearchaction.org\/letter-from-academics-scientists-researchers-expressing-concern-regarding-faos-announcement-of-plans-to-forge-a-new-strategic-partnership-with-croplife-international\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> academics and scientists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and nearly 50<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/justfoodsolutions.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> philanthropic groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/A\/HRC\/49\/43\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has stopped the LOI from moving forward into a more formal Memorandum of Understanding. <\/span><b>However, the LOI\u2014which has no expiry date and did not undergo the FAO\u2019s new due diligence process for private sector engagements\u2014remains in place.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthetic pesticides are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Fossils-Fertilizers-and-False-Solutions.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">derived from fossil fuels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, destroy the soil\u2019s ability to capture carbon, release greenhouse gases, and over-all<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panna.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Climate-Pesticides_Summary_PANNA2022_ENG.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make agricultural systems more vulnerable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the impacts of climate change. Pesticides also play a major role in the alarming rate of global species extinction, which threatens the basis of food production and sustainable development.
